Interview Question – Tell us about yourself

Interview Question – Tell us about yourself

Tell us about yourself – do you know how you would answer this interview question?

It seems easy enough and is one of the most common interview questions. The majority of job seekers, unfortunately, fumble through this question.

What is the answer that the employer is looking for? There is a way to answer this question and knock it out of the park. It is called an elevator pitch.

What is an elevator pitch? Well, it is a way to properly introduce yourself and answer this question in an interview. It is what you do and what you want them to know about you. It is your background, expertise, and talents.

There are typically four parts to a successful elevator pitch.
  1. Who are you and what do you do?
  2. Why do you do what you do, what motivates you?
  3. What do you bring that is of benefit. What makes you different?
  4. Why does this job or opportunity relate back to your career goal?

A good elevator pitch is 30 seconds long. Keep it simple and to the point. Once you have written your pitch, practice, practice, practice. Elevator pitch mistakes to avoid are speaking too fast, using technical terms, acronyms, or slang, and being robotic or not using pitch and tone.
