Virtual Mentoring for Newcomers
Want to make a difference to newcomers who may feel the need to connect in order to reduce the feelings of vulnerability and isolation during this time?
Mentors and mentees can connect on a variety of online platforms for the following:
- friendship, encouragement, and support
- help to find online community and government resources and
- English language conversation and practice
Settlement Workers will assist you to identify and assess your needs and barriers and provide you with information, options and referrals to relevant services and resources within the community.
Volunteer Friendship For Newcomers is designed to match adult community residents with newcomers, helping them to learn how to live in Canada, integrate to the community and provide an opportunity to practice English.
Youth Peer Support will provide support and friendship for immigrant youth and offer opportunities to integrate the community.
Employment Mentors will offer informal advice, connections, moral support and network opportunities to internationally trained professionals.
Settlement Mentors will assist newcomers with learning more about the community, building connections, practicing English, and coping with the stresses of moving to a new country.
Seniors Outreach will provide social and learning opportunities for immigrant seniors in conjunction with non-immigrant seniors aged 55 years or older.
The Central Okanagan LIP is driven by a Council of community stakeholders whose aims are to support newcomer settlement and integration through local community engagement and collaboration.
Our specialist provides employment support and assists with job search, resume/cover letter preparation, and interviewing skills.
Taaloo Zorouna, Arabic for “Come Visit With Us”, is a series of short video interviews with Syrian Refugees who have come to the Thompson Okanagan in the past year. It reflects the importance of being social to Syrians and acts as an invitation to get to know our new neighbours.
Providing participants with the high-quality interpretation and translation services in over 30 languages. We also arrange certified translation upon request.
Will provide an overview of BC Society, introduce newcomers to BC and community services, assist immigrants to obtain skills related to social connections, knowledge and life skills.
