The Refugee Response Team – Thompson Okanagan Kootenays (RRT-TOK) primarily includes the six cities and surrounding area of Kamloops, Vernon, Salmon Arm, Kelowna, Penticton, and the Kootenays. The collective group includes team members from Settlement Service organizations in the region that have come together to effectively address settlement issues at the regional level.
The plight of refugees from Afghanistan and displaced Ukrainians has captured the interest of people throughout the world and generated a great deal of humanitarian support. With the Government of Canada’s commitment to bring 40,000 Afghan refugees to Canada as quickly and safely as possible, private sponsorship groups and settlement services agencies throughout the region are working to bring in and support Afghan families to settle in their communities. With the onset of the war in Ukraine, the Government of Canada implemented the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel, allowing displaced Ukrainians to travel to and work in Canada under a temporary visitors permit.
To support these efforts and assist with the settlement of the Afghani refugees and displaced Ukrainians, the Province of British Columbia has created the Refugee Readiness Fund (RRF) and the Refugee Response Team (RRT) Network through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs.
