At KCR Community Resources, our Crisis Line Responders provide suicide support via text through Talk Suicide. If you or someone is looking for information about the service, platform, or trained volunteers, please see below. If you can’t find the answers to your questions, kindly email textcrisisline@kcr.ca.
If you are currently experiencing thoughts of suicide and are looking for help, 45645 (available 11:00 am – 11:00 pm PST). If you are outside of the operating hours, please call 1.833.456.4566 or 1.800.SUICIDE for immediate support.
As an individual looking for help within Canada, you can text 45645 between the hours of 11:00 am and 11:00 pm PST, seven days a week, to reach a highly trained Crisis Responder.
If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide, a responder will assess your risk around suicide by performing a safety assessment, provide short-term emotional support, and may connect you with additional resources within your community for longer-term help. You can stop the conversation at any time by typing the word STOP.
When you text in, responders will listen to you, hear how your problem is affecting you, assess for suicide, and provide national and/or local resources that could help connect you to supports in your area.
Responders only know what texters share with them. Your information remains completely confidential unless sharing it with emergency services is necessary for your safety. We take both your confidentiality and your safety very seriously.
Texts are recorded for quality assurance and statistical purposes. Any information shared with our responders through Talk Suicide is kept confidential. We do not share your information with any third parties unless sharing it with emergency services for your safety.
Talk Suicide does not charge texters. It is free to access as many times as you need if you are experiencing a crisis. Depending on your carrier, standard text messaging rates may apply. Please contact your telephone provider for more information.
We haven’t come across any providers that say Talk Suicide. Some may display Text message: Short Code Programs, while others show nothing. If this is a concern, please reach out to your cell phone provider for confirmation.
Sometimes, during high demand, it may take a while to connect. You can usually expect to wait just a few minutes to connect to a responder, but if we are very busy the wait can be up to half an hour. If you or someone you know are in immediate danger, please call 911.
The KCR Community Resources Crisis Line is happy to partner with Talk Suicide (formerly the Canadian Suicide Prevention Service) to improve the wellness of children, youth, and adults in the Central Okanagan and beyond. Funding for the texting service is provided to KCR Community Resources by the KGH Foundation Kiwanis Legacy Fund.
