Peter was nominated by Katelin Mitchell (Manager, KCR Immigrant Services) for the 2017 Employer Awards for Newcomer Employment through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The award recognized Peter’s YIG for tackling the challenges and obstacles faced by newcomers and striving to make them feel at home in Canada through its people-focused hiring practices.
Every year through these awards, IRCC recognizes local businesses’ innovative efforts to improve the labour market attachment and integration of newcomers across Canada. The winning organizations help reduce the barriers faced by newcomers in entering the labour market and improve their overall settlement in Canada.
“Peter’s YIG strives to be a community store, while reflecting the diversity of their neighbourhood and meeting the needs of their community members. Peter Boyd, Owner/ Operator, can often be heard saying “It is just the right thing to do” when talking about his diverse hiring practices. Their organization employs about 200 staff members.”
“Our community demographics show that only 13.9% of our population are Immigrants and yet over 22% of Peter’s YIG employees have immigrated to Kelowna from various countries. This organization’s strong belief in the benefits of hiring Immigrant workers makes them a champion in our region.”
“Many of their Newcomer employees are highly educated, yet choose to stay at Peter’s because they feel well respected. Many staff members have been a part of the Peter’s family for several years. Peter’s understands and appreciates the lives of newcomers and therefore provides flexible work schedules to meet child care needs, transportation limitations (bus schedules) and allows for longer vacations for those who travel long distances to visit family.”
Thank you Peter for all that you do in our community for newcomers and immigrants.
